Burns & McDonnell Staff Electrical Designer in Kansas City, Missouri

This position offers the opportunity to exercise your design skills, plan and produce 2D/3D drawings, and showcase your leadership talents through coordination, communication, and execution of projects.
The Staff Electrical Designer will work on a diverse portfolio of projects with various clients in the Oil, Gas & Chemical industries to perform the following duties:
Design 15kV, 5kV, 480V and below power systems, lighting systems, protection and controls, and site and facility design.
Plan and develop a full range of drawing deliverables such as one-lines, motor schematics, hazardous areas, grounding, duct bank, lighting, power, installation details, and section/elevations.
Perform calculations for lighting, conduit, cable tray, duct bank, grounding, and cables.
Develop and grow industrial construction knowledge and field experience.
Talk with vendors to specify small power equipment such as dry-type transformers and panelboards.
Follow all company, client, and project design and drafting standards.
Execute, organize, and maintain project revisions to designs and drawings in a logical and well-structured manner.
Analyze reports, drawings, and tests to plan and design projects.
Interpret and apply design codes and specifications related to design requirements.
Complete and review design drawings within scope, budget and schedule. Perform project tasks and assignments within budgeted hours and deadlines.
Incorporate schedules, budgets and project criteria into electrical design and layouts.
Coordinate drafting and design efforts with both internal and external clients and vendors.
All other duties as assigned.
Bachelor’s degree in drafting technology or related field and eight years related experience or associate's degree and ten years related experience or eleven years progressive detailing and design experience. + Must be willing to travel to the job site and meet with clients and construction personnel to scope the project and answer construction problems.
Three or more years of refinery, gas processing, or pipeline experience preferred.
Experience in Class I Division 2 Groups B, C, D hazardous areas is a plus.
Must be willing and eligible to obtain or currently hold a valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC).
Strong understanding of NEC, Electricity Basics, Industrial Construction, Industrial Facility Safety, and CAD Standards.
Ability to utilize both 2D and 3D applications to prepare engineering drawings. Strong preference for experience in SmartPlant 3D, SmartPlant Electrical, AutoCAD, and MicroStation.
Strong understanding of design software such as: Visual Lighting, AmpCalc, ETAP, and Excel to develop the design deliverables. Ability to learn and effectively utilize new design software programs.
Strong understanding in the theory and practices of electrical design; competent in the fundamental concepts of other disciplines as they relate to electrical; and capable of operating electrical design software necessary to execute production tasks.
Ability to work collaboratively with others (Project Managers, Engineers and Designers) in a multi-discipline project team environment to resolve design or drawing issues as appropriate and to accomplish objectives.
Excellent written & verbal communication skills.
