The Director of Engineering role isresponsible for providing leadership, direction and execution of strategic vision for a team accountable for developing improvements in centralized engineering services. The role willspearhead all Scholastic engineering activities and establish a culture of process improvement throughout many distribution centers.Execution of the centralized services capital, systems and processes improvement strategy by developing and implementing an operating plan, processes and layout, and equipment selection plan to optimize processes in operations across the network, resulting in efficient and cost effective operations. This position would develop the automation and controls strategy and engineering capabilities for Scholastic distribution centers.


Distribution Center Design & Automation

  • Developthe distribution vision, strategy/technology roadmap that supportsconvergence and adoption of operational technologies (e.g. Warehouse/DC ofthe Future)

  • Understand and leverage emerging roboticsautomation technology and assess their feasibility for use across thenetwork

  • Developand implement automated Material Handling Solutions within select distributionfacilities

  • Leadthe design of distribution facilities, including new facilities, facilityretrofits, conveyor changes, automation equipment and other materialhandling equipment changes

  • Leadoverall WMS/WES design and configuration for both automated and manualfacilities

  • Developand maintain relationships with key automation vendors to supportorganization strategies

  • Drivethe execution of the strategy throughout centralized services, resultingin increased efficiency, productivity, improved quality andcost-effectiveness

Process Design & Continuous Improvement

  • Develop and lead network solutions forcontinuous improvement (CI) savings associated with automation andefficiency improvements, while partnering with leaders across all segmentsof the company

  • Direct the implementation and supporta labor management program and software configuration

  • Direct the development and maintainmulti-variable labor standards

  • Lead the engineering team to identify,define and implement process improvement opportunities

  • Address all aspects of change, includingpeople, processes, systems, and equipment

  • Introduce and adapt improvementmethodologies as appropriate to drive change (ex. Lean or Six Sigma)

Project & People Management

  • Responsible for developing and managingthe Capital program to support both strategic and operations initiatives

  • Identify and create the functionalprocesses, practices, tools and techniques required for robust engineeringproject delivery, aligned with operational technology/Lean developmentprocess philosophies

  • Prepare and analyze unit plans and reports

  • Create an effective work environment bydeveloping a common vision, setting clear objectives, expecting teamwork,recognizing outstanding performance and maintaining open communications

  • Principal communicator and coachresponsible for the recruitment, career development, performancemanagement, and succession planning for the Engineering organization

  • Direct the Engineering team to develop andexecute industrialization/capital plans for new projects/investments

  • Engages cross-functional management,through collaboration and building relationships, in the execution of theprocess improvement strategy to further ensure enterprise-wide acceptanceand compliance


  • Requires a minimum of seven (7)plus years of experience as an engineer in retail and/or e-commercedistribution, with a broad range of operational technologies and processes

  • Five plus (5+) years ofsuccessful experience in the development and implementation of automationand robotic solutions within warehouse/distribution space

  • Complex Automation solutiondevelopment

  • Custom Machine designexperience

  • Programmable Logic Controllers(PLC)

  • Human Machine Interface (HMI)

  • Robot Simulation Software

  • Master’s degree in Industrialor Mechanical engineering or related field required, or a combination ofeducation and equivalent work experience

  • Lean/Six Sigma (Black/MasterBlack) certification desired

  • Analytical, planning andorganizing, sound judgment, decision making and leadership skills required

  • Experience with time &motion data collection software and standard deviation techniques

  • Advanced working knowledge ofMicrosoft Office products with an emphasis in Excel and Access

  • Expertise in integrating,maintaining & troubleshooting conveyor systems (e.g. sensors &controls) and WMS/WCS/WES software

  • Dynamic verbal and writtencommunication skills in a distributed organization

  • Ability to analyze and providesolutions for cost reduction through process improvements and cost/benefitanalysis

  • Capable of designing andrecommending department layouts and product flows in the distributioncenter

  • Able to identify operationalbottlenecks and develop, analyze and present cost efficient solutions

  • Experience in serving astechnical expert on specialized projects or programs; act as advisor to managementand/or customers

  • Effective at providing guidanceto distribution and logistics related to effective and efficient use ofassets and processes

  • Experience in identifyingcapacity impacts to distribution centers associated with varyingparameters within the supply chain

  • Experience in developingpreferred methods/Standard Operating Procedures

  • Proficient at utilizing labordata to cost justify capital expenditure and process change ROI

  • Skillful at using labor andmaterial cost data to compare and recommend process change and communicateaccurate process costs to senior management

  • Able to conduct ergonomicevaluations, recommending and implementing improvements to work areadesigns

  • Has the ability to take ideasfrom concept to implementation and can influence decision making with allstakeholders

  • Possess superior multi-taskingability to meet concurrent project deadlines, highly organized. ProjectManagement Certification desired

  • Ability to drive processimprovements and work within a team to resolve problems

  • Excellent interpersonal skills,professional attitude and approach (and the ability to interact withindividuals at various levels of the organization, up and down)

  • Experience with workmeasurement & performance management programs, process automation,conveyor design and optimization, large project management, and warehousesystems

  • Experience with labor reportingsystems

  • Willing to travel 50-70% (lessfor incumbents located in Jefferson City or St. Louis, MO.)
