Pickett and Associates, Inc. Lead Engineer, Substation in St. Louis, Missouri

As a Lead Engineer, you will be responsible for the oversight of our substation engineering services. Some of the main responsibilities will be to provide technical and hands-on support to others in creating substation design deliverables.

This position will also be involved in business development and company initiatives, which may include establishing business strategies and objectives.

  • Manage and provide technical leadership during proposal, design, and construction stages of substation projects

  • Define design scopes, best practices, procedures, and criteria for medium to high-voltage substation projects

  • Perform electrical calculations such as grounding touch and step potentials, short circuit study, protective device coordination, one line diagram development, protective relaying, and substation switchyard layouts

  • Manage the performance of the team and delegate project work

  • Plan, organize and manage the day to day activities of substation projects from inception through completion

  • Oversee substation design and quality assurance and control

  • Lead coordination of design activities with other departments (Civil/Structural, Transmission Line, etc.)

  • Maintain a high level of quality and responsiveness to client requirements in alignment with Pickett’s standards

  • Interact regularly with clients, which includes maintaining current relationships and developing new relationships

  • Lead meetings with internal and external stakeholders

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (required)

  • Professional Engineer (PE) (required)

  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification (preferred)

  • Minimum of 10 years of hands on power delivery engineering or substation consulting experience (required)

  • Solid understanding of substation project scopes and deliverables

  • Strong experience with AutoCAD and MicroStation

  • Knowledge with the operation and design of substation SCADA and Telecom systems

  • Strong understanding of substation protection and control design and industry standards

  • Skilled with liaising substation, transmission, environmental, real estate, construction, and maintenance stakeholders

  • Demonstrated ability in the application of engineering theories and principles

  • Increasingly proficient in practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, preparing, and presenting recommendations

  • Ability to work in a safe manner and always obey safety regulations

  • Capable of being a self-starter with the ability to thrive in an unstructured, varied and schedule driven work environment

  • Strong ability to collaborate with team members as well as peers in the electrical utility industry

  • Effective communication skills (verbal, written and presentation) Able to communicate technical matters in an understandable and efficient manner

  • Ability to travel up to 20% and work outside normal business hours
