Position Summary

DRS Sustainment Systems is seeking a Full Time Toolmaker/Machinist/Welder. The ideal candidate will be responsible and accountable for producing quality work to prescribed standards, with a focus on continuous improvement to meet customer commitments on schedule and within budget.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Responsible and accountable for producing quality work to prescribed standards, with a focus on continuous improvement to meet customer commitments on schedule and within budget

  • Follows written work instructions must maintain a safe work environment by adhering to all safety procedures including those which govern the handling of materials, chemicals, tools, and equipment (WHMIS)

  • Proper use of required PPE

  • May participate in LEAN Events, “Six S” activities, action teams etc

  • Support, communicate, reinforce and defend the mission, values and culture of the organization

  • Analyzes specifications, lays out metal stock, sets up and operates machine tools, and fits and assembles parts to make and repair metalworking dies, cutting tools, jigs and fixtures, gauges, and machinists’ hand tools, applying knowledge of tool and die designs and construction; shop mathematics; metal properties; and layout, machining, and assembly procedures

  • Studies specifications such as blueprints, sketches, models, or descriptions, and visualizes product

  • Computes dimensions and plans layout and assembly operations

  • Measures parts to close tolerance using precision measuring devices

  • Sets up and operates machine tools (eg, lathe, milling machine, shaper, and grinder) to machine parts

  • Verifies conformance of machined parts to specifications

  • May examine standard or previously used tools or dies and modify as appropriate

  • May develop specifications from general descriptions and make drawing or sketch

  • Applies basic and develops advanced skills in procedures, techniques, tools, materials, and/or equipment, as appropriate to area of specialization

  • Determines sequence of operations and set up procedures for repeatable set-up

  • Understand requirements, possess appropriate skills, and perform various welding processes in some positions on products of specific metal types

  • Weld with an acceptable degree of proficiency, experience and knowledge, and meet various codes and specifications including AWS and ASME

  • Know, qualify and perform the following: MIG: carbon steels

  • Perform material preparation, open set-up and fit to meet process requirements proficiently in MIG

  • Read blueprints, weld symbols and NDE symbols and interpret acceptance criteria

  • Coordinate communication regarding production processes with other departments such as Engineering, Purchasing, Manufacturing Engineering, Quality, and Sales

  • Accurately perform visual inspection of weldments to confirm compliance to various codes and standards

  • Perform daily and weekly maintenance on all equipment

  • Share technical requirements, techniques, safety information, etc with peers

  • Basic Qualifications*

  • High School Diploma or GED

  • Demonstrated ability to make independent judgment

  • Team player, ability to work independently while meeting deadlines, handles a high volume of work
